Beckham window plus renewal timing, do not lose the discount
I wish I saw this two months ago. I assumed the 6 months started from when I physically moved into my flat in Gracia, but my gestor just told me it's linked to the social security registration date. I'm cutting it so close now and scrambling for some missing paperwork from my UK employer. Don't wait until the last minute like I did.
The 90 day window for the renewal is definitely safer in Barcelona. I tried to do my TIE renewal last year right at the 60 day mark and the bottleneck at the office near Placa d'Espanya was insane. If you have any changes in your contract or salary amount since the first application, they are going to look at it much harder during the renewal. Have you checked if Maria is seeing many rejections for people who changed employers?
I'm also worried about the employer change thing. I switched from a US tech firm to a startup last month. My renewal is in March. My lawyer said as long as the new contract meets the salary threshold it's fine, but the paperwork is a nightmare.
This is good advice but I think people overstate how hard the renewal is if your situation hasn't changed. If you are still with the same company and making the same money, the DNV renewal is mostly just proving you still pay your social security. The Beckham Law deadline is the one that actually ruins lives if you miss it. That is a permanent mistake you can't fix later.
It's not just about the money though. If you miss the Beckham window you lose like 25 percent of your income for years. Calling it a mistake that ruins lives is pretty accurate given the cost of living in Barcelona right now.
Has anyone dealt with the Beckham Law filing while being self employed on the DNV? I heard the rules are slightly different for autonomos compared to those of us on a foreign contract. I'm registered with Seguridad Social but I'm worried the tax office will find a reason to deny the 24 percent flat rate because of how my invoices are structured.
You have to be really careful there. If you're an autonomo you need to make sure you aren't performing a "professional activity" that's excluded from Beckham. Most tech nomads are fine but definitely double check your CNAE code with your gestor.
I actually disagree on the renewal timing. If you file too early in Barcelona you risk them asking for updated "vida laboral" documents because the ones you submitted in January are "old" by the time they look at the file in April or May. I usually aim for 45 days before expiry. It gives enough buffer without makes the docs look stale to the reviewer.
