Bringing a second laptop and gear through customs at renewal
i just went through terminal 4 with two macbooks and a portable monitor in my carry on. nobody even glanced at me. honestly most of the time customs is just a green door that you walk through. unless you have ten laptops in shrink wrap they dont care if you have two devices for work. the madrid agents are looking for meat and tobacco mostly.
true but if you get the one agent having a bad day they can technically ask why you have two. i always make sure one is formatted or clearly used. just in case.
The Canon R6 and a drone is a decent amount of kit to carry on. I'm moving back to Madrid next month for my second year and I'm bringing a desktop Mac Studio in my checked luggage. That's what has me sweating. A laptop is one thing, but a whole desktop setup looks a bit more permanent. Did you notice if they were x-raying bags in the green channel when you walked through? Usually that area is totally empty.
Wait, why were you going to the Plaza de España office for a DNV renewal? I thought all digital nomad renewals were handled online through the UGE portal or the Mercurio system. Did you actually have to go in person for an appointment? Most people I know just upload the PDFs and wait three months for the resolution. I'd love to know if there's an in-person option because the online system is a total mess right now.
honestly the biggest risk isnt customs its the airline weighing your backpack at the gate. some of the budget carriers like lufthansa or iberia express are checking weights for carry ons now. if you have two heavy work laptops and a hub you might be over the 8kg limit. that is where they get you.
Dublin is a bit of a weird one because it's non-Schengen. If you had flown from somewhere like Paris or Berlin back to Madrid, you wouldn't even see a customs officer or a border guard. If you're worried about gear, it's sometimes easier to layover in a Schengen hub and then fly domestic into Spain. Then you just walk out with the crowd from the luggage carousel and no one is watching.
That's a solid tip but it might be overkill for just a couple of cameras. The extra cost of the flight probably isn't worth the peace of mind unless you're carrying 10k in gear. Most DNV folks are just carrying a laptop and maybe a monitor.
this playbook is solid but did anyone in your group mention customs taxes specifically. i heard a horror story about someone coming back to madrid with a studio display and getting hit with a tax bill because they couldnt prove they owned it before moving here. did your friends have receipts or just luck.
i usually keep a digital copy of the invoice on my phone. i havent had to show it yet but for something big like a display it is worth having. gear for the dnv is usually fine though.
this matches what i heard at the meetup in chamberi last week. most people are overthinking the gear aspect for renewals. as long as its not in original packaging you satisfy the personal use requirement. my company sent me a new dell and i just threw the box away before flying in. zero issues.
good list but i would add a note about the external batteries. madrid airport security has been getting weird about the high capacity power banks lately. customs wont care but security for your connecting flight might. keep those in your personal bag and not in any checked luggage or you might lose them.
I had a totally different experience at Barajas last year. I wasn't doing a renewal yet, but they pulled me aside because I had two laptops and a tablet in my backpack. They didn't charge me anything but they asked a lot of questions about why I needed two. I told them one was for work and one was personal, which is true. It depends on the day and the officer. If you get someone having a bad day, they'll make you open every case.
That's bad luck. Usually they only do that if they think you're going to sell them here. If the keyboard has visible wear and tear, it's pretty hard for them to claim it's a new import for sale. Plus if you have the DNV, you're legally living here, so why wouldn't you have your stuff?
great to see this consolidated. i spent way too much time worrying about my dual screen setup when i first moved to malasaña. for the 2025 renewals i think the consensus is definitely just to act normal. if you look like a pro digital nomad they usually just wave you through. they know we are here to spend money.
I'm at the same stage as you, August 2023 start and looking at my renewal soon. My concern isn't customs, it's the 183 day rule for tax residency. If you're flying back and forth to Dublin, are you keeping track of your days? Customs might not bat an eye at your laptop, but the tax office definitely watches those entries and exits if they decide to audit your renewal later on. Did you have to submit your full passport scans for the renewal?
I think people mix up customs with the police at the border. Customs cares about the taxes on your stuff, and immigration cares about your right to stay. If you're flying from Dublin, you're coming from outside the Schengen area which makes sense why you'd be nervous about declarations. But honestly, as long as the gear looks used and doesn't have the original boxes, they rarely care. It's when you have three iPhones in shrink wrap that the trouble starts. Glad your Madrid renewal went okay, did you need to show your proof of submission (resguardo) at the airport?
I've never been asked for the resguardo at Barajas. I just show the expired TIE and the renewal receipt if they look twice. Customs is a different gate anyway, you usually just walk through the green door. It's way more chill than people on Facebook make it out to be.
I carry two laptops every time I travel and I've never once thought about customs. It's 2025, everyone has a work phone and a personal phone, a work laptop and a personal tablet. Unless you're carrying them in their original retail packaging, it's just personal property. The drone might be the only thing that looks suspicious if it's a large professional one, but even then, it's a hobby. Irish residents and Spanish residents travel with tech all the time.
does this playbook cover bringing stuff through for a partner too. my wife is on my dnv as a dependent and we are worried about her bringing her own rig back after the holidays. if i have two and she has one that is three total for one household. might look suspicious if we walk through together.
youre fine. i move three laptops between me and my partner all the time. just dont walk through carrying all three yourself. let her carry her own gear.
i did my renewal paperwork in january and brought a whole recording setup back. mic arm and everything. customs in madrid is such a non issue compared to the actual bureaucracy of the renewal itself. just make sure you dont have the price tags still on the cables. thats the only thing they really look for.
The bit about the renewal being a return trip and not a new entry is the most important part. You already live here. You aren't importing goods into Spain for the first time because those goods were already technically here or are personal effects of a resident. I think the anxiety comes from the initial move where everything is new. By the time you get to the 2025 or 2026 renewal, you're just a local coming home from a trip to Ireland.
