    Crypto offramp into a Spanish IBAN, what survived KYC

    Palma DNV here. Needed to move ETH → euros → CaixaBank. Kraken won. Tested it with €5k first. KYC was standard: proof of address, bank statement screenshots. Setup Wise as the withdrawal method, then SEPA transfer hit Wise in ~12 hours. Wise to CaixaBank? Ten minutes. Did another €3k a few weeks later. No flags. No delays. No drama. Why not Binance? Heard too many DNV horror stories about DNI verification getting stuck. ATM via crypto debit card? Fees kill it past a few hundred euros. Kraken survived. Everything else? Not so much.

    I tried doing this with Santander last month and they straight up told me they don't accept transfers from "unregulated entities" even though it was Coinbase. Glad to see some branches in Mallorca are actually following the law. Which specific branch did you go to? Sometimes the manager makes all the difference.

    I had a totally different experience with Kraken. They held my funds for three days for a manual review even though I provided my TIE and everything. It might be because I'm from a different non-EU country. It's interesting that it was so fast for you in Palma. Maybe it depends on which bank you are sending to. Wise usually clears things fast but sometimes they act like a middleman that banks don't trust.

    Did you use the Pro version or the basic one? I noticed the compliance checks are sometimes stricter on the basic app for some reason. Also make sure your name on Wise matches exactly with the exchange. Even a missing middle name can cause that three day delay you mentioned.

    Be careful with those 10 minute transfers to Caixa. They might let the first few go through, but they are known for doing a random audit on nomads after a few months of high activity. Keep every single PDF receipt from Kraken and Wise in a folder. You will probably need to show them to your gestor when you do your tax filings next year anyway. Spain is very aggressive about tracking where the money comes from.

    I actually use the crypto debit cards at the ATMs in Santa Catalina sometimes. The fees are high like you said, but for 200 euros here and there to pay for dinner it's way more private. For the big stuff like your 5,000 euro transfer, I totally agree Kraken is king. I just worry about Wise eventually closing accounts for crypto activity since their terms are a bit gray on that.

    This is a lifesaver. I am in Palma too and Sabadell has been a nightmare trying to explain where my Kraken transfers are coming from. Did you have to provide translated tax returns for the original capital or just the exchange exports? I have three years of CSVs ready but I am terrified they will just ignore them.

    They usually won't even look at the CSVs if they are over 50 pages long. Better to provide a summary statement signed by a CPA if you can. It saved me weeks of back and forth.

    I wouldn't get too comfortable with CaixaBank just yet. They are notoriously picky about crypto transfers. Even if it comes from Wise, once you hit a certain threshold of total annual deposits, their internal compliance might flag you. Have you checked if they'll ask for your tax returns later? I had a friend in Palma who did something similar and they froze his account until he showed the original purchase history for the crypto. Might be worth keeping some documentation ready just in case.

    Your experience with the source of funds docs matches mine in Valencia. Spanish banks are obsessed with the "paper trail" from the very first euro you invested. If you have years of trades it becomes a full time job just to organize the PDFs for them. Glad you got it sorted.

    Glad Kraken worked for you. I tried the same thing but with Revolut instead of Wise and it was also pretty fast. The main thing people miss is that the DNV is still new to some of these banking systems. My NIE didn't scan right on the Binance app last month either, so I think you made the right call avoiding them. Did you notice if the exchange rate on Kraken was better than the direct P2P options? I usually find the SEPA route is way cheaper than the debit cards.

    The P2P stuff in Spain is a nightmare now with all the new regulations. Kraken is definitely the way to go for the DNV crowd because they actually understand the residence permits better than the smaller exchanges. Just don't try to send it directly to Caixa from the exchange or you'll get a very unpleasant phone call from the bank manager.

    the bit about the wealth tax declaration is the part everyone forgets. if you did not file the modelo 720 in previous years they will flag you the second that money hits the IBAN. glad you mentioned the doc list because most people think a screenshot of their wallet is enough. it is not.

    I've been using Bit2Me since they are actually based in Spain. It makes the KYC a lot easier because they know exactly what a DNV residence card looks like. The fees are a bit higher than Kraken for sure, but I feel safer knowing they won't suddenly block my account because they don't understand my paperwork. Have you looked into them at all for the next round?

    Honestly surprised you got through this in 2024. Most banks here are closing accounts if they even smell p2p or crypto. Did you have to use a gestor to talk to the bank for you or did you just walk in with the folder? I have heard having a local professional handle the intro helps.

    19
    @carmen2673·1y ago

    Just walked in with the folder. If you speak some Spanish it helps a lot. If you go in with English only they tend to be more "by the book" and restrictive.

    @paellamad65·1y ago

    Did they ask you for the 030 or any specific tax residency proof before they let the transfer clear? I am on the DNV and still waiting for my final residency card. Not sure if I should wait until the TIE is in my hand to try this.

    @alvaro__eu61·1y ago

    Wait for the TIE. Doing it with just the passport and the visa sticker is asking for a frozen account. Trust me.

    Thanks for sharing the timeline. It feels like every bank has its own set of rules that change every Tuesday. I am using Revolut as a middle man right now but I know I need a proper Spanish IBAN for the long term because of the padron and other local stuff. Checking these docs now.

    Just a heads up on the 10,000 euro limit. If you move more than that in a year from outside Spain or from crypto, you might trigger an automatic report to the tax agency here. Even if it's broken up into 5k and 3k chunks, they see the aggregate. Since you are in Palma, the local branch might be chill, but the central compliance offices in Madrid don't play around. Kraken is transparent which is good for records but bad if you're trying to stay under the radar.

    @chueca_23·1y ago

    That is a solid point. The Modelo 720 is also something to watch out for if you have more than 50k in the exchange at the end of the year. It's not a tax exactly, just a disclosure, but the fines for missing it are insane.

    The real bottleneck isn't getting it to Wise, it's the Spanish bank side. Most people on the DNV use Wise for their daily spending anyway because the local banks like Caixa and Santander are such a headache. Are you actually paying your rent and utilities from the Caixa account? I found it's easier to just keep everything in Wise and only move what's absolutely necessary for the official stuff to the Spanish IBAN.
