Empadronamiento in Valencia with passport vs NIE?

So I just moved to Valencia from Madrid and the process here feels completely different. Back in Madrid, the guy at the office asked for my physical NIE card twice before he would even look at my rental contract for the padrón. Now that I am here in Valencia, people are telling me I can do the empadronamiento with just my passport while waiting for my TIE appointment. I'm a bit paranoid because the UGE approved my digital nomad visa but I haven't gone to the police station for the fingerprints yet. If I get the padrón now with my passport number, will it mess things up when I finally get the residency card? I don't want to have to go back to the ayuntamiento to update the number if they are just going to reject it anyway. Does anyone have experience with the Valencia offices specifically? I have an appointment at the one in Calle Periodista Azzati next week and I'm stressed they will send me home empty handed like they did in Madrid.

I did mine at Periodista Azzati in July. They took my passport no problem. You just have to go back once you get your physical NIE card to update the record. It takes five minutes and no appointment is usually needed for just a data change.

Are you sure about the no appointment thing? I tried to walk in last month and the security guard told me to get a cita previa online. Valencia is getting strict lately.

wait until you try to get a medical card. that's when the passport vs nie thing actually starts to matter. for the padron itself, passport is fine. as a digital nomad i've found that valencia offices are generally more used to us than other cities. just be polite and have your uge pdf printed out just in case they ask why you're here.

Madrid is always more difficult for some reason. In Valencia the padrón is the first thing you should do. Some gestors say you need it before you even book the police appointment for the TIE. Just bring your passport and the original lease.

honestly valencia is much smoother for this. just make sure you have the original and a photocopy of everything. they will keep the copy of the passport and the contract. if you have a digital signature on your contract, print out the validation page too. some of the older workers there don't trust digital signatures without the verification code on the side.

Make sure your landlord signed the property document they require. If the lease is older than three months you might need a recent utility bill too. They love their paperwork here.

just a tip for that specific office. show up 10 minutes early and look for the security guard to check your name on the list. valencia is way less bureaucratic than madrid but they still love their paper documents. don't show them anything on your phone. print it all out or they will send you to the copy shop down the street.

Just a heads up, if you are living in a shared flat they might ask for a signed authorization from the person already on the padrón there. Check the Valencia ayuntamiento website for the specific form.

I had the same issue. I just used my passport. When the TIE arrived I went back to the office and they linked the two numbers in the system. It didn't mess up my residency status at all. It's a very standard thing for immigrants.

are you sure you want to do the padron before you have the tie. if you use your passport now, you will have to make a second appointment just to change the number to your nie later. it is a pain to get those appointments in valencia right now. i would just wait a few weeks and do it all at once with the nie number from your approval letter.

you can't wait if you need the padron to get the tie appointment in the first place though. most police stations in valencia province ask for a padron dated within the last 90 days. waiting could create a loop where you can't get either.

don't worry about the tie appointment being later. the padron is just a record of where you live, not your residency status. when you go to the police for your fingerprints at zapadores, they actually like it if you already have the padron paper in hand. it proves your address. i used my passport for the padron and it didn't cause a single issue during the tie process.

i actually had a bad experience at periodista azzati last week. the woman told me i needed my nie number on the paper even if i didn't have the card yet. i had to show her the uge approval letter that had my assigned nie on it. maybe bring a copy of your visa approval just in case they get difficult about the passport alone. it's all down to who you get at the desk that day.

that is weird because the law is clear that a passport is valid. was your contract in your name or was it a sublet? they get really weird about sublets and room rentals if the owner didn't sign a specific authorization.

Wait, I thought the digital nomad visa meant we skip the padrón for the first 90 days? My lawyer in Barcelona told me that.

you can 100 percent use your passport in valencia. i did exactly this at the office on periodista azzati last month. the staff there were actually way more relaxed than what i dealt with in barcelona. they know the deal with the digital nomad visa and that we don't have the tie cards yet. Just make sure your rental contract is signed by all parties and you have the most recent utility bill if it's not a brand new lease.

it is true but just a heads up that once you get your physical tie, you should technically go back and update the padron record with your nie number. it makes life easier later for the health card or if you want to buy a car. it only takes five minutes to update later on.

the madness of madrid is not the rule here. valencia allows passport registration for the padron because you are legally here. the only thing that might trip you up is if your landlord hasn't paid the property tax or if there are too many people already registered at that address. check your contract date because they sometimes get picky if it was signed more than 3 months ago without a recent receipt of rent.

Your lawyer is wrong. You need the padrón for healthcare access and to register with the Social Security office if you are working as an autónomo. Don't skip it.
