Fake gestor charged 1200 for a free Modelo 030, the red flags

Okay, you guys need to hear this, because the "1200 for a free Modelo 030" thing just hit way too close to home for me. I’m on a digital nomad visa here in Madrid, and about a month ago, I almost fell victim to a similar scam artist masquerading as a gestor. I was trying to get my NIE and social security squared away, and this guy, let's call him "Javier" (not his real name obviously), came highly recommended by someone I met through a Facebook group, which was my first mistake in hindsight. He quoted me 900 euros upfront just to "prepare the paperwork for the NIE and assist with the Modelo 030 submission." I remember thinking, that sounds steep, but I was new to Madrid and feeling overwhelmed. He even tried to convince me that the Modelo 030 had some special "expedited processing fee" connected to digital nomads. Luckily, a friend back home who’d gone through the DNV process in Portugal told me to slow down. I did some digging, found the official AEAT website for the Modelo 030, and realized it's genuinely free and relatively straightforward to do yourself online, or at least with minimal help. When I confronted Javier, he got super defensive, claiming I was "misunderstanding the Spanish bureaucracy" and that his fees covered "ongoing consultation." Classic gaslighting. I walked away, thankfully not out any money. The biggest red flag for me was the pressure to pay a large sum *before* any actual work was done, and his inability to clearly break down the costs for specific, official forms. Always verify official forms and their costs directly on government websites. Learn from my near-miss before someone charges you an arm and a leg for something truly free.

Actually, for some people, paying a gestor is worth it just to avoid the website. Have you tried using the AEAT site lately? It's a nightmare of Java errors and broken links. I wouldn't pay 1200, but I'd happily pay 100 to not have to deal with the technical errors. You're right that Javier was a scammer, but we shouldn't act like these forms are "easy" for everyone.

Wait, how did he even justify 1200 euros? Even the top tier law firms in the city center don't charge that much for basic registrations. It sounds like he was betting on you being too busy to look it up. The "expedited fee" line is a classic because Spanish bureaucracy is notoriously slow, so every nomad is desperate to jump the queue. But there is no legal way to pay the government to skip the line for a Modelo 030.

Exactly. The only thing you can pay for is a faster appointment with certain third party services, but even that is often high risk and bordering on illegal. The actual government processing time is the same for everyone.

man i am so sorry this happened. 1200 for a modelo 030 is absolute insanity. that form is literally one page and you can submit it yourself at the agencia tributaria or even via mail if you have to. these guys prey on dnv holders because the whole tax system feels so intimidating when you first land in madrid. did they at least give you a fake receipt or did they just take the cash and vanish?

the worst part is they usually offer to do the padron too and then charge another 500 for a free appointment. i hope you reported the firm name so others can search for it on here.

Madrid is getting worse with this as more DNV people arrive. These scammers know we have the 2500 euro monthly income requirement so they think we are all rich and clueless. I hope you Reported his profile in the group you found him in. If we don't call them out by name people will keep falling for it.

it is wild that these fake gestores are still operating so openly in 2024. i had a guy try to charge me 800 for the same thing back in march. the minute they say you cannot pay via bank transfer to a company account, you gotta run. legitimate gestorias will always give you a real invoice with a vat number. thanks for sharing the timeline though. seeing the red flags helps everyone else avoid the same trap.

This is exactly why I tell everyone to get their Certificado Digital the second they land in Madrid. Once you have that, you don't need these middle men for 90 percent of the stuff. You can log into the Sede Electronica and see exactly what's going on. These "Javiers" rely on nomads being scared of the system and not having their digital signatures set up yet.

True, but you can get the identity verification done at most Social Security offices or local town halls without a gestor. It just takes one morning of waiting in line.

Getting the certificate is a catch-22 though because you often need help getting the appointment for the identity verification. It's a circle of frustration.

I had a similar guy try to tell me the DNV needed a special private insurance broker that cost 200 euros just for the introduction. The level of "consultancy fees" some people try to tack onto free services is wild. The 030 isn't even a DNV specific thing, it's literally just telling the tax agency you exist. Did he try to ask for the money via Revolut or wire transfer? That’s usually the final nail in the coffin.

The Facebook group recommendation is where most people get burned. There are so many fake accounts in those Madrid Expat groups that just exist to shill for these predatory gestores. If a recommendation comes from a guy who only has two photos and joined the group last week, run away. I always check if the gestor is actually registered with the Colegio de Gestores before I even give them my phone number.

Even some of the real ones are lazy though. I hired a registered guy and he still messed up my address on the 030, which caused a huge headache when I tried to set up my bank account later. registration doesn't always equal quality.

did you actually end up getting your tax id or did you have to start over from scratch with a real professional? people really underestimate how much damage a bad filing can do to your residency status later on. if they messed up the address on that 030 it could mess up your notifications for months. i would double check everything they submitted on the official tax portal if you have your digital certificate already.

The 900 euro quote is absolute insanity. I paid a reputable firm in Madrid about 250 for the entire NIE and TIE process including the forms. Anyone charging more than that just for paperwork help is taking advantage of the nomad tax. Honestly, the Modelo 030 is just a census registration with the tax office. You can do it yourself in ten minutes if you have a digital certificate or Clave. Glad you didn't pay him.
