Income proof for renewal when your contract ended midyear

My Spanish DNV renewal is coming up in September, but my freelance contract ended in June. Do I need to show income for the full 12 months, or just the months I was working?

you need to show you still meet the financial requirements when you apply. if you are currently earning zero, you don't qualify for the renewal even if you made a million euros between january and june. they care about the future stability of the visa holder. you need a new contract or at least a bridge agreement pronto.

does your old contract have a clause about the end date? if you haven't officially notified the social security that you stopped working as an autonomo, you might still be okay if you get a new contract quickly. but keep in mind that being registered as an autonomo without income while your visa is up for renewal is a risky game.

from what i've seen in the telegram groups, they focus heavily on the previous three months of bank movements. if july and august show no income hitting your account, it's a huge red flag. standard advice is to have a contract that covers the duration of the renewal period. have you considered reaching out to your old client for a short term extension?

is there any chance you can use savings instead? i heard some people were trying that route but it's risky for the dnv compared to non lucrtative.

i literally just went through this in bilbao. the uge generally expects you to show that your income is stable and ongoing at the time of the application. if you don't have a current contract when you hit submit in september, you're going to have a hard time. they want to see the last three months of invoices and bank statements. are you looking for a new client right now?

it depends on the processor though. some people get lucky but bilbao has been getting stricter since the 2024 update. they definitely look at the average over the last year but current status is king.

honestly it sounds like you might be in trouble if you don't have a new contract by september. the dnv isn't like a job seeker visa. it's for people who already have the remote work set up. you have some time before september though so maybe you can find a project that starts in august to show a new stream of income.

my lawyer told me the uge looks at the whole year to ensure you didn't drop below the minimum threshold on average, but you must be actively employed or under contract at the moment of renewal. if you're between jobs in september, you might want to hold off on filing until the very end of your 90 day window if you can land something by then.

don't take this as legal advice but i've seen people get rejected for exactly this. the requirement is that the conditions that got you the visa are still in place. if the contract ended, the condition ended. you should probably talk to an agency like lexidy or similar because bilbao is a bit old school with how they check files compared to madrid.

lexidy is expensive but for a situation like this it might be worth it. better than a flat rejection and having to leave the country.
