Receiving USD payroll cleanly, the SWIFT vs Wise math
Be careful with the Hacienda if you keep big balances in Wise. My lawyer in Palma told me that while Wise is great for the transfer, you really want to move that money into your Spanish account immediately. If you have over 50k outside of Spain you have to file the Modelo 720 which is a massive pain. For $4,500 it is fine but don't let it sit there for months. I do the same thing with Revolut and it works similarly well.
The 50k limit is definitely the thing people forget. I move my pay over to BBVA the second it clears in Wise just to keep my records clean. It makes the digital nomad visa renewal much easier if your Spanish bank statements show the full income history.
it really depends on which bank in palma you are using. santander has been hitting me with crazy intermediate fees that weren't in their original fee schedule. wise is definitely better for the transfer itself, but once the money hits the spanish account, tracking it for the renewal next year is much cleaner if it comes from your own name. i've been sticking with wise of late because the spread is just too wide otherwise.
the biggest issue i found was the transfer duration. swift is taking three days for me lately while wise is almost instant. if you're in palma and using sabadell, watch out for their maintenance fees on top of the currency exchange. they sometimes waive them if you have high enough monthly inflows, but you have to go into the branch and literally argue with them to get it done. it is annoying.
did you go to the branch on jaime iii? they are usually better with english speakers and dnv issues. i had the same fee problem and they fixed it in ten minutes.
Honestly $60 in fees for a $4,500 transfer via SWIFT sounds almost cheap compared to what Santander tried to pull on me last year. They took a massive cut and the exchange rate was about 3 percent off the market mid rate. I lost almost 200 euros on a single transfer. I moved to the Wise strategy and never looked back. Traditional Spanish banks are stuck in the 90s with their foreign exchange.
That is exactly why I will never use Santander. They are the worst for hidden fees. The problem is some landlords here still demand you have a local account from one of the big three banks or they wont even look at your rental application.
the math usually favors wise until you hit about five thousand dollars. after that, some of the premium accounts with bbva actually become cheaper if you can get them to waive the flat wire fee. i appreciate you putting this together. it matches what i've seen at the branch near plaza de espana but the staff there are helpful one day and useless the next. standard spain.
Wait until you hear about the monthly fees imaginBank starts hitting you with if you don't have your insurance or something else tied to them. I switched to the BBVA fee free account for nomads and it pairs perfectly with Wise. The transfers arrive via SEPA almost instantly and I have not paid a single inbound fee since the switch in December.
if you use the wise digital card for your daily spend in palma you avoid the transfer fees entirely. i just keep everything in usd and pay as i go. it saves a lot of headaches with the spanish banks. though you still need the local bank for your rent and digital certificate stuff. i only move over what i absolutely need for the bills.
only problem check is the tax office. they really like to see that money sitting in a spanish account for the wealth tax or just for proof of funds if you lose your job. it is a gamble to keep it all in wise.
The math on Wise is definitely better but I noticed the rates fluctuate a lot during the day. If you are moving $4,500 at once, wait for the US markets to open. I usually get a slightly better conversion rate in the afternoon here in Spain than I do early in the morning. It is only a few bucks difference but every little bit counts when you are paying Palma prices for rent these days.
I have been doing this exact setup since I moved to Mallorca in August. One thing to watch out for is that imaginBank sometimes flags the incoming SEPA transfer from Wise if the amounts are inconsistent. I had to go into a CaixaBank branch once and show them my work contract because they put a hold on a transfer. It was a one time thing but it was stressful.
I gave up on imaginBank pretty quickly for this exact reason. Their customer service is nonexistent if a transfer gets stuck. I actually use a mix of Wise and Mercury for my US business entity and then pay myself into a personal Sabadell account. The fees on the Spanish side are predatory if you don't have a high value account or a specific deal with the branch manager.
did any of those 6 people mention revolut? i know this is about swift vs wise, but revolut business has been the sweet spot for me lately. you get the local iban and the exchange rate is basically mid market. i stopped doing the direct swift transfers months ago because any money saved on fees was lost to bank of america taking their cut on the outgoing side. it made no sense.
im curious if your local palma branch manager actually cares about the source of the funds. when i opened my account, they told me specifically that transfers from wise might not count as payroll for the purpose of getting lower mortgage rates later. they want to see the employer name on the wire. it might be worth paying the swift tax if you plan on buying property here in mallorca.
that is a really good point. caixabank is super picky about that. if they dont see the payroll code on the transfer it just looks like a personal transfer. it could mess up your credit score here.
Does your US employer have any issues sending to the Wise routing number? My HR department at the company I work for is very old school. They told me they would only send to a real physical bank. I tried to explain that Wise provides a routing and account number through a partner bank but they were incredibly skeptical. I ended up stuck with the SWIFT fees because they just would not budge.
Tell them it is technically an Evolve Bank and Trust or Community Federal Savings Bank account. That is who Wise uses for their US details. Once I gave my HR the actual bank name instead of saying Wise it went through without any more questions.
Have you looked into the Revolut business account as an alternative? I use it for my US clients and the conversion from USD to EUR is often even cheaper than Wise if you have one of the paid plans. Since you are moving 4k a month the premium subscription basically pays for itself in exchange rate savings alone. Plus you get a nicer card for when you are out at the cafes in Santa Catalina.
