Reduced focus weeks: the schedule my team agreed to

My team in Malaga just agreed to 4-day work weeks, with Fridays off unless critical, meaning more time to explore Andalusia. Has anyone else tried a "reduced focus" or 4-day week, and what were the biggest challenges?

honestly i tried this and went back to five days. i found that i just ended up working 12 hour days during the 'on' days to keep up and it ruined my work life balance. malaga has too much going on in the evenings to be stuck at a desk until 9pm. glad it is working for your team though.

be careful with your digital nomad visa requirements if this affects your gross income. the spanish government is very picky about the minimum income threshold. if those reduced weeks mean you dip below the 2026 requirements even for a month it could cause issues when you go to renew your residency. double check your contract.

actually the renewal process got stricter this year. i'd suggest keeping a buffer or making sure the 'reduced' part doesn't reflect as a lower salary on the official gestoria filings.

as long as the annual total is above the limit it shouldn't matter. they usually look at the last few pay stubs and the contract itself. just don't let your company report it as part-time work on the paperwork.

it's great to see more nomads getting these perks. i'm currently looking for a new role and a 4 day week is my top priority. does your company allow this for all levels or just senior staff? i've noticed a lot of companies only give this flexibility to people who have been there for years.

glad you posted this. i was one of those people who dm'd you. malaga is getting so busy with remote workers that i feel like we need a local meetup just to talk about these productivity hacks. thanks for sharing the breakdown of the schedule.

this is exactly why i moved here. having that flexibility and a team that understands the remote life is worth more than the salary. i might try to pitch this to my lead next month. do you have any stats on how it affected your team goals for the quarter?

that sounds smart but how does it work with the spanish hours if your team is in a different time zone? im in malaga too and the lunch break here usually kills my flow anyway. if you have a team across the atlantic i can see this getting messy with the meeting schedule.

i did something similar last year. we moved to a 4.5 day week where we sign off at 1pm on fridays. it has been a game changer for weekend trips to seville or granada. my advice is to set very clear out of office messages so clients don't expect you to be around. once you give them an inch they'll try to pull you back into meetings.

we tried something similar last year and it fell apart because management couldn't help themselves from booking emergency calls. did you guys have to get HR to sign off on this as part of your DNV application or was it purely an internal team agreement? just curious if the contract change matters for the 2026 renewals.

usually as long as your pay stays the same the office hours dont matter for the visa renewal. the government just wants their tax money they dont care if you work four days or five.

make sure you actually log off. i know a guy here in el palo who "negotiated" a four day week but he still checks his phone every ten minutes on his day off. if you don't set boundaries with your team you're just working for free. the nomad life isn't worth it if you're still stressed on the beach.

reduced focus weeks sound great on paper but in my experience the work just piles up for the following week. do you actually see a drop in total output or does everyone just work faster during those specific days? i find that living in spain makes it harder to stay focused when the weather is this good.

it is definitely a trade off. you work harder on the work days so you can actually enjoy the coast on the off days. beats being halfway productive all week long.

i think more teams will go this way by 2026. the traditional five day grind is dying. especially for those of us down here in andalucia where the lifestyle is the main draw. solid advice on pinning this here.

That sounds incredible. I'm still on a standard five day schedule and the burn out is real when the weather gets nice here in Malaga. Did you have to take a pay cut for those weeks or did you just compress the 40 hours into four days? I've thought about asking my boss for this but I'm worried they'll think I'm less committed since I'm already working from Spain.

Usually the pay stays the same if you're hitting your KPIs. My company moved to a similar model and productivity actually went up because we weren't just staring at Slack on Friday afternoons.

This is the dream for 2026. My company is actually pushing for more 'sync time' which is the opposite of what i want. Did you use any specific data to convince them? I want to propose a similar trial for my department but need a solid argument beyond just wanting more time to hike in El Chorro.

tell them you'll focus on deep work during those four days. use a tool to track your output for a month and show them you aren't actually doing much on fridays anyway. most people just coast at the end of the week.

i'm curious if your team is mostly in the same time zone. working from malaga for a us company makes a four day week harder because the overlap is already so small. if i miss a friday i basically miss half my collaboration window for the week. definitely jealous of your setup though. the beach clubs on a friday morning must be empty.
