Sabadell business account for autonomos, requirements 2024

Here's what Sabadell wants if you're a DNV and autónomo in Madrid. Walked into their Gran Vía branch (near Plaza de España) in February with my NIE and Hacienda registration already sorted. Bring these: NIE + passport Rental contract (proof of address) Certificado de Alta en el RETA (from Seguridad Social) Modelo 036 (showing your autónomo activity) A short business plan – mine was three paragraphs about freelance graphic design, €2,500/month estimated income, and a few client names The catch: It took nearly three weeks to fully open. "It's with compliance" is apparently the branch's favorite phrase. Had to follow up twice. But once it's done? App is solid. SEPA transfers run about €0.50. Bottom line: Bring everything. Expect a wait. Don't panic.

Regarding the 0.50 euro transfer fee, be careful with that. Once you start getting paid from outside the EU, like from the US or UK, Sabadell likes to tack on hidden currency conversion fees. It's often better to receive funds in a Wise account and then transfer the euros to Sabadell for your tax payments. It saves a fortune in the long run.

Totally agree on Wise. Sabadell's exchange rates are daylight robbery. I only use the Sabadell account for paying my social security and rent. Everything else stays in my digital bank.

was this the digital account or did you have to go into a branch in madrid. i tried doing the online signup last month and it kept hanging on the nie upload screen. curious if you used a specific gestor to push it through or just walked in.

i had the same issue with the app. honestly just go to the branch near plaza castilla. they usually have one person who speaks decent english and can bypass the app errors.

saving this for later. i am moving to madrid in june and everyone says sabadell is the easiest for foreigners but the requirements seem to change every week. did they ask for your previous years tax returns from your home country or just your current work contract.

Wait, they asked you for a business plan? I opened a Sabadell account in Chamberi last month and they didn't ask for anything beyond the 036 and my NIE. It seems like every branch just makes up their own rules as they go along. I wonder if it depends on the income amount you tell them. I said 4,000 and they were very quick with the paperwork.

That 3 week wait is actually pretty fast for Gran Via. I tried a branch near Retiro and they told me 5 weeks just because I have a US passport. Did you have to pay for the mandatory life insurance? That's their usual trick to waive account fees. If you didn't, check your fine print, because they often sneak it in or charge a 15 euro quarterly maintenance fee.

I second the insurance thing. They told me it was mandatory for my DNV account but my lawyer said it's illegal to force it. I had to threaten to report them to the Bank of Spain before they backed off. Just be firm.

sabadell has been a nightmare for me lately. the fees just went up in jan and the customer service is basically a ghost town if you don't speak perfect spanish. were your fees the standard 15 euro a month or did you get that first year promo. i find their pricing varies a lot depending on which office you walk into.

thanks for sharing the timeline. i am waiting on my dnv approval and was worried about how long it takes to bridge the gap between getting the nie and having a functional biz account. did you need your actual physical tie card or did the document with the number work for them.

most branches in madrid won't touch you without the physical card. i tried with the paper letter and got rejected at three different spots before my tie arrived.

super helpful to see the actual numbers. people always say bank accounts are free for autonomos but they usually hide the maintenance fees unless you have a crazy high balance or multiple insurance policies through them. did they force you to take out their health insurance or accident insurance. that is usually the catch with sabadell.

did you have to sign up for the expansion account or the specific autonomo one. usually they push the expansion account because it has fewer requirements but the fees kick in faster. appreciate the detail on the email receipts. helps to know what a realistic total cost is.

Did they give you any trouble with the Modelo 036? My accountant forgot to check one specific box for international services and the bank rejected my whole application. I had to go back to the tax office before Sabadell would even talk to me again. It feels like you need everything 100 percent perfect or they just hit the eject button.

I went to the same branch and they were a nightmare. They tried to tell me my rental contract wasn't enough proof of address because it was for less than 11 months. I had to go get a padron just to satisfy the branch manager. It's really frustrating how inconsistent they are with the DNV requirements compared to the regular residency.

The "it is with compliance" line is the standard Spanish banking response for we have a backlog and haven't looked at it. I had the same issue with my DNV application in January. I found that if you don't go back to the office in person, they just forget about you. Pestering them is the only way to get the account active. Did your app work immediately after or did the digital key take another week?

I'm a freelance dev and I avoid the physical branches as much as possible. I tried the online-only Sabadell account but it wouldn't let me use a foreign phone number for the SMS codes. Did you manage to use an international number or did you have to get a Spanish SIM first? That's usually the biggest headache for new arrivals in Madrid.

You definitely need a Spanish number. Most of the banking apps here crash or just won't send the OTP to US or UK numbers. Just grab a cheap prepaid SIM from a shop near Plaza de Espana before you go in.

honestly santander was way faster for me but the sabadell interface is much better for actual business tracking. did you have to pay a commission for the initial transfer from your non-eu account. that usually where they get you on the fees.

sabadell took almost 4 percent on my first wire. use moneycorp or wise to fund it after you get the iban or you will lose a fortune.
