Standing desk plus monitor in a 35sqm piso, the layout
The cable management under the desk is the most important part of this. Nothing makes a small Palma flat look trashy faster than a bunch of black wires hanging everywhere. I tucked mine into a felt tray I got from a shop in El Corte Ingles. It looks way cleaner than the plastic or metal ones. Definitely helps when you're inviting people over for drinks in such a small space.
That 45 euro Bricomart tip is exactly what I needed. I've been looking at expensive standing desks online but the shipping to Mallorca is always a nightmare. Most sites want an extra 100 euros just to get it across the water. Did you have to rent a van to get the tabletop home or did it fit in a regular taxi? These streets are so narrow I worry about logistics.
Be really careful with those floating shelves if you are in an old building. A lot of the walls in these Santa Catalina apartments are basically crumbly plaster and won't hold much weight. I tried the Leroy Merlin ones last year and the whole thing literally fell off the wall two weeks later. Make sure you use the heavy duty toggle bolts or you might find your plants on your monitor one morning.
Doing the standing desk life in a 35 square meter place in Palma sounds like a nightmare for space management. I am curious how you actually fit a full monitor setup without it feeling like the office is literally on top of your bed. Did you go with a wall mount or just a narrow desk? Many of those old buildings in Palma have such weird layouts that every centimeter counts.
I tried a wall mount in my last studio but the plaster was so old it almost crumbled. Better to get one of those ultra slim standing frames if you can find them.
the cost breakdown is helpful but i am mostly worried about the heat in summer. palma gets so humid and working in a tiny piso with a desktop or big monitor running all day makes it a sauna. did your receipts include a decent portable ac or are you just suffering through it? i am planning my move for 2026 too and the climate vs electricity cost is my biggest worry.
35sqm is tiny for a full size standing desk. I ended up going with a foldable wooden desk from a shop in the center because I couldn't stand looking at a monitor while trying to eat dinner. For me, the mental break of putting the office away is worth the lack of ergonomics. Do you find it hard to switch off when your workspace is always staring at you?
I used to feel that way but once you get the DNV and start working 40 hours a week here, your back will thank you for the standing desk. The kitchen table life is for tourists and people on vacation.
An ultrawide in a 35sqm place is a bold move. I found the heat from the monitor and the laptop gets really intense in the summer months if you don't have good AC. Does your place in Santa Catalina have a split unit? If not, that corner is going to be a sauna by July. I had to downgrade back to a single 24 inch just to keep the ambient temp down in my office nook.
I am looking at doing the same thing but I might skip the monitor and just go with a laptop stand. 35sqm is so small your kitchen table is basically your desk. If your receipts show you paid a premium for a high end monitor in Spain you might have overpaid. I usually find it cheaper to bring tech from home and just buy the heavy furniture here.
I live in a studio near Plaza de la Reina and honestly the noise is a bigger issue than the space. How do you deal with the street noise in Santa Catalina while you're on those calls? I tried a similar setup but had to move my desk away from the window because the motorbikes were driving my clients crazy. The Bricomart custom top is a great shout though, way better than the standard Ikea sizes that never quite fit Spanish apartment nooks.
The noise is brutal on weekend mornings but noise cancelling headphones like the Sony XM5s changed my life. I don't think I could work in Palma without them. Overkill for music but essential for focus.
Honestly 35sqm is plenty if you are solo and organized. I noticed you didn't mention the brand of the desk. If you bought it locally in Mallorca the shipping fees are usually what kills the budget. If you found a place on the island that actually stocks them without a three week wait please share the name. I am tired of paying the islands tax on every piece of furniture.
i am really glad you shared the specific dates from your receipts because the timeline for getting furniture delivered to the islands is always longer than people think. it took me a month just to get a chair. for a 2026 move people should definitely be looking at ordering stuff before they even land if they have a long term lease set up.
Careful with that though. If the delivery guy shows up and you are still at the foreigners office getting your tie sorted you might lose the delivery slot. Plus most shops wont hold stock for more than a week.
the layout is the hardest part. if you are working remotely on the dnv and spend 8 hours at that desk you really need a view of something other than a wall. i hope your 35sqm place has a balcony or at least a big window. Palma is way too beautiful to be staring at a monitor in a dark corner all day. sounds like you have the logistics sorted though.
Did you have any trouble with the landlord about the wall holes? Every place I've rented in Palma has been super strict about the fianza. I'm terrified to hang even a picture frame. I found some adhesive cable clips at a hardware store near the port that help with the cord mess without needing to drill anything. Might be a safer bet for people who don't want to lose their deposit.
You can just buy the filler paste at any local ferreteria for three euros. No landlord has ever noticed as long as you paint over the spots properly before the final walkthrough. Just don't tell them you did it.
Careful with the adhesive stuff too. Some of those strips rip the actual paint and plaster off when you remove them, which is harder to fix than a clean drill hole.
I did something similar in a flat in Pere Garau but I regret the corner desk. It felt like it trapped me in a dark hole. If your layout allows it, I highly recommend trying to face the desk outward into the room. It makes the 35sqm feel much bigger than staring directly at a wall all day. Also check your power bill because some of those older Palma buildings have terrible wiring and a high draw setup can trip the breakers.
